Load Calculations Take the Guesswork Out of Sizing New HVAC EquipmentDo you trust that your HVAC contractor will direct you to the correctly sized HVAC equipment for your home’s specific needs? Unless your professional is performing load calculations, you could be in trouble. Here’s a look at what a proper cooling or heating load calculation involves, and why it’s so important for system performance.

What a proper load calculation involves

A reputable professional will utilize the established software protocols, Manual J and Manual D, to find the right cooling or heating equipment for your home, with all of its unique characteristics. Manual J calculations specifically enable your contractor to evaluate your home’s heating, cooling, and dehumidification needs in order to determine which A/C, heat pump or furnace is the right size to get the job done. These calculations require technicians to consider factors such as:

  • Home size in cubic feet
  • Orientation of the home
  • Regional climate
  • Number of windows/window locations
  • Number of household occupants
  • Insulation levels
  • Airtightness of the home
  • Landscaping

Manual D is utilized in the design of ductwork. This is especially important in new construction or renovations. By using the numbers gleaned from Manual J, your contractor can determine how the ductwork must be designed in order to support your new HVAC system.

Never trust a contractor who claims that he or she can “estimate” the right sized equipment for your needs based upon “experience” and “rules of thumb.” Additionally, do not let yourself be talked into purchasing a system that is too large for your needs. This will cause a number of problems. First, oversized systems reduce efficiency and experience significant strain as they tend to cycle on and off frequently. Secondly, an air conditioner that’s too big cannot properly dehumidify a home, leaving it feeling clamming and creating ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth.
