A Programmable Thermostat Might Help Lower Your Utility Bill

A Programmable Thermostat Might Help Lower Your Utility BillWhile the most recognized benefit of a programmable thermostat is convenience, saving on energy costs is also a major benefit, as long as you use the thermostat correctly. A programmable thermostat differs from a traditional manual thermostat in that it allows you to program energy-saving settings ahead of time, based on your daily and weekly schedule. The device helps you save on utility costs by making sure your HVAC system isn’t providing heating or cooling when nobody’s home or awake to enjoy it.

Simple Tips for Energy-Saving Operation:

  • Program the timer so it sets back the heating or cooling several degrees before you go to bed and in the morning before you leave for work or school.
  • Schedule the programmable thermostat to return the temperature to a comfortable level shortly before you awaken or return from work or school.
  • Set different temperature changes to match your weekend schedule.
  • Avoid using the “hold” feature as much as possible, since it will defeat the energy-saving purpose of the programmable thermostat.
  • Make sure your setback periods last for at least eight hours to get maximum energy savings.

How much each household saves will depend on usage habits, energy rates or costs, and temperature settings. However, if the thermostat is installed, programmed and operated correctly, you should notice a significant reduction in utility bills.

Use a Professional HVAC Installer:

It’s best to have professional HVAC technician install your programmable thermostat. Even though it looks simple enough to install this device, you’ll want to get it right the first time. When you are scheduling routine maintenance for your air conditioning and heating systems, ask the installer to install a programmable thermostat at the same time. Once you start working with and getting the hang of the controls, you will start noticing savings on your energy bills.
