Air Conditioner Replacement: Know When It’s Time

Air Conditioner Replacement: Know When It's TimeEvery part of your HVAC system has to be replaced at some point, and your air conditioner (A/C) unit is no different. There are many different signals that it’s time for an air conditioner replacement:

  • Is it getting old? Air conditioners are only designed to last for 12 to 15 years with good maintenance. If you haven’t had time to take care of your A/C or only infrequently have called in a professional, your system likely won’t even last that long. If you start having issues with an A/C that’s nearing this age, it might be time to replace it.

  • Poor reliability. An A/C is critical to your home’s comfort during South Florida’s lengthy and intense cooling season. If it’s repeatedly breaking down, replacing it might be a good idea. Consider the cost and stress of the breakdowns when weighing the financial cost of a replacement.

  • Poor performance. The difference between a new A/C that works perfectly and has the latest technology and a unit that can’t keep up with cooling demands in your home is huge. The new generation of high-efficiency air conditioners leaves the old models in the dust when it comes to efficiency and performance.

  • Is it deteriorating? Have a look at your outdoor condenser/compressor. Signs of rust and deterioration can indicate much larger problems to come. If your unit is in poor condition, consider replacing it before something goes wrong.

  • Energy usage trends. There is a lot of useful information in your energy bills. Look at your past bills and see if your A/C has started using more energy in recent years, as this often happens as they age. Calculate the savings of a new high-efficiency A/C and compare it to the increasing energy costs of your current unit. A new air conditioning system should pay for itself in lower operating costs in several years, when compared to your old A/C.
