Make Sure That High Energy Bills Don’t Keep You Down This Summer

Make Sure That High Energy Bills Don't Keep You Down This SummerThere’s just something about summer that feels more free, more fun. Don’t let high energy bills stifle that feeling. Follow these simple tips to conserve energy usage while keeping your cool.

Change the Filter

The air filter in your air conditioner serves two purposes. It keeps dust and debris out of the mechanical workings of your A/C, and it keeps that same dust and debris from blowing into your home. When the filter is clogged, the air conditioner has to work harder to accomplish the same amount of cooling. Clean filters mean less work and less energy usage. Inspect and change your filter regularly, especially if you’re running the A/C all day every day.

Get an Annual Tune-up

To maximize the efficiency of your cooling system, keep it properly maintained. An annual tune-up is a one-time expense, but inefficiency creates high energy bills on a monthly basis.

Adjust the Thermostat

Set your thermostat a couple of degrees higher. Your body will acclimate to the temperature change in a matter of days and your energy bill will go down. For even more energy savings, use a programmable thermostat to minimize energy usage when you’re not at home.

Plug the Holes

Central air functions best in a sealed environment. Replace weatherstripping and caulk around windows and doors to ensure that your conditioned air stays where you want it: inside. It might also be beneficial to check your air ducts. Gaps and cracks in the ductwork allow cool air to escape into your attic, or warm attic air to infiltrate your ducts. Seal those leaks to keep the cool air where you want it.

Use Energy Star Equipment

Newer air conditioning systems are designed to use less energy, which means reducing energy bills. If your home will need a new A/C in the next year, go ahead and replace it with an Energy Star model to maximize your savings for the life of the system.
