Two-Stage Cooling: Just Right for Our Balmy Climate

Two-Stage Cooling: Just Right for Our Balmy ClimateIf your home’s air conditioner has been experiencing frequent repair issues or just isn’t performing the way it used to, it’s likely time to consider an upgrade. For the best performance and efficiency, you should strongly consider replacing it with a two-stage cooling system. Your expert A/C technician can help you choose the right system for your South Florida home.

The compressor is the key feature of a two-stage cooling system that differentiates it from a standard, one-stage A/C. Standard systems only run on high speed so when you need to cool your home, the A/C cycles on full blast only. This results in a serious amount of wasted energy and an increase in your energy bill. Two-stage systems use a compressor that can run at a low and high speed. They usually pair this feature with a variable speed air handler that adjusts the amount of air that’s delivered through your ducts, thus providing better comfort and efficiency.

A two-stage cooling system typically runs at lower speed 80 percent of the time and is sufficient to meet your cooling needs during this time. Except during blistering hot days, the lower speed is usually sufficient. Two-stage systems run nearly continuously at the lower speed, which means they do not cycle on and off frequently. This has the following advantages:

  • Improved humidity control: When the A/C runs continuously, it will dehumidify better. Short, strong blasts do not provide enough time for the A/C to remove moisture from the air.
  • Comfort: On/off cycling leads to hot and cold spots in your home. Continuous mode eliminates these different temperatures by circulating just enough air to make it comfortable.
  • Longevity: A one-stage compressor, with its frequent cycling, is subject to a lot of wear and tear and is likely to break down before a two-stage system. With a two-stage cooling system, the useful service life can be extended, especially with annual preventative maintenance.
