Before the Season Ends Weatherize Your Home Now!

Before the Season Ends Weatherize Your Home Now!Home weatherization is important to people all across the country, not just residents of Northern states. People living in Martin County, Palm Beach County and Indian River County can reduce their energy consumption considerably and maintain comfort year-round with a few basic steps.

Caulking and weatherstripping

This is one of the least costly and easiest things you can do to weatherize your home and lower energy bills. In addition to checking the weatherstripping around doors and windows, look for any area of your home where two types of building materials come together. The areas where pipes go out of your house and around cable or phone lines can be filled to reduce air loss.

Air ducts

Leaks in air ducts are responsible for about 20 percent of all heat loss in homes. You can improve the efficiency of your HVAC by sealing any leaks with a fiber-reinforced mastic tape. Duct, also called duck tape is not the best choice. For best results, schedule a energy audit with your HVAC technician.

This is especially beneficial for older homes that may not have sufficient insulation in the walls, attic, or crawl space. New insulation is highly effective and easy to install. You do not have to feel overwhelmed about tackling a large project all at once. Focus on one area at a time. If your Florida home was built in the 1970s or before, you probably do not have adequate insulation unless some has been added. Energy was inexpensive back then and the benefits of insulation were not fully understood.

Proper ventilation

As you weatherize your home, do not create an environment that is so airtight that it traps in pollutants. Correct ventilation controls moisture, to prevent mold growth. There are three types of ventilation: natural, spot, and whole-house. Consult with an HVAC technician about which solution is best for you.
