What Are the Top Benefits of Energy Recovery Ventilators?A home that is extremely well-sealed is much more comfortable and cheaper to live in, but a thorough seal can also result in a ventilation reduction. An energy recovery ventilator is a practical and efficient system that can improve indoor ventilation, while substantially reducing costly energy loss.

How Does an Energy Recovery Ventilator Work?

Energy recovery ventilators, sometimes called enthalpy-recovery ventilators, are usually installed in the attic. There, they serve as a whole-house ventilation system, pulling fresh, clean air in from outdoors, while venting away stale air from inside the home.

An energy recovery ventilator transfers a significant portion of the energy in the outgoing air to the incoming air. In cooler environments, this means the system heats incoming air, while in warmer climates, it cools incoming air. By transferring energy to incoming air, your home heating and cooling system doesn’t have to work as hard to bring fresh air inside the home.

Inside the ventilator, the incoming and outgoing streams of air pass through a heat exchanger. The air streams do not mix, but heat energy is transferred as appropriate. Depending on the season, incoming cool air is warmed or incoming warm air is cooled inside the heat exchanger.

Benefits of an Energy Recovery Ventilator

  • Improved indoor air quality: A constant supply of fresh outdoor air is available to keep your indoor spaces well ventilated and free from airborne particulates and contaminants.
  • Better humidity control: Energy recovery ventilators transfer moisture to or from incoming air, as needed. This helps maintain a more consistent indoor humidity level during both winter and summer.
  • Better monetary savings: Energy recovery ventilators recycle energy you’ve already paid for, providing improved ventilation with less waste of both energy and money.
