Don’t Forget Your HVAC System on Your Spring Cleaning List

Don't Forget Your HVAC System on Your Spring Cleaning ListSpring is a traditional time for cleaning the house from top to bottom, and this lull of milder weather before the heat and humidity arrive makes it ideal for taking care of HVAC spring cleaning, too. Here are some HVAC-specific tasks you can tackle this spring to keep your cooling system working reliably and efficiently, and ensure good indoor air quality all summer long.

Scour Your Return Registers

Every time the blower cycles on, airborne debris gets drawn into your return registers. If they get blocked, the system is starved of vital airflow, so it’s essential to keep them clean. First, give both sides of each register a thoroughly vacuuming, then remove each one and scrub them with warm, soapy water. While the register is out, vacuum any accumulated dust from inside the accessible ductwork too.

Clean Your Floor Registers

The open louvers on your floor registers can let all kinds of miscellaneous debris fall through into the ducting boot below. Take each register off, and vacuum it and suction out whatever has collected underneath. Clean them thoroughly with warm, soapy water just as you did the return registers. Before you replace any registers, make sure they’re completely dry.

Tidy Up Around the Condenser Unit

To allow ample airflow through the outdoor condenser coil when you start up the air conditioner for the first time this year, you need to clear away dead leaves, fallen branches and other yard debris that has collected around it over the winter. Also, trim back any tall grass or other vegetation in a two-foot wide swath around the unit.

Schedule Professional HVAC Service

Spring HVAC maintenance should include inspecting and tuning up the system, replacing the air filter, and thoroughly cleaning all the key components including the outdoor condenser coil, indoor blower fan and evaporator coil. During the visit, ask your technician to check the condition of the ductwork and advise you whether you should also schedule professional duct cleaning.
