Does Your Air Filter Require Changing More Often in the Summer?

Does Your Air Filter Require Changing More Often in the Summer? | NisAirIn the heat of a Florida summer, we count on our HVAC systems to be there when we need them. One way homeowners can make sure their HVAC system is in good working order is to change the air filter as needed. But that brings up the question: how often does the air filter need to be changed? Is it the same year-round, or does it change with the seasons?

The answer to that question depends on a few factors. One thing to keep in mind is that your air filter is placed at the point in your system where air is taken up from inside your home. It’s sent through your ducts to be cooled and then blown out again into your living space.

The filter’s job is to catch as much dust, pollen, pet dander, and other pollutants that it can before they get into your machine and then get recycled back into your home. When a lot of air is being pulled through the air filter because the A/C is running a lot, the filter naturally collects more particles.

A basic rule of thumb is to check your filter every month. During times of high use, like the summer months, you’ll probably need to change your filter every time you check it. During times of lower use, like the cooler parts of spring and fall, you may be able to go between two and three months without changing the filter.

The key is to make checking and changing your filter a habit. Air filters are usually “out of sight, out of mind.” Unfortunately, running an HVAC system with a heavily clogged filter forces the system to work harder. Not only does this use more energy, but it causes your machinery to wear out sooner. Cleaning or replacing your filters regularly extends the life of your HVAC system and can even save you money on your energy bills.
