5 Tips for Simple Summer HVAC Maintenance

5 Tips for Simple Summer HVAC MaintenanceWhen the summer heat bears down on Florida this year, you want to be able to rely on your cooling system to work properly and reliably. Here are five HVAC maintenance tips you can use to make sure your air conditioner or heat pump is ready to keep your home cool and comfortable all season long.

  1. Call for preventive maintenance. The number one priority for summer HVAC maintenance should be to have your local trusted HVAC service provider conduct a preventive maintenance inspection on the system. Your HVAC pro will check the system from end to end, making minor repairs and adjustments that will keep the equipment working at its best.
  2. Clean the outdoor unit. The outdoor unit of your cooling system should be cleaned inside and out. Accumulations of grass, mud, dirt, sticks, leaves, or other vegetation should be removed from around the unit and especially from the vents. Any vegetation, mud, or animal nests inside the unit should be removed. Trim grass, trees, bushes, or hedges on all sides of the unit to ensure there is adequate clearance for airflow.
  3. Change the air filter. Put new air filters in the cooling system. Dirty, clogged filters can’t clean your indoor air sufficiently. They can also interfere with the airflow the system needs to function. It’s a good idea to check filters at least monthly and change them when needed.
  4. Check the thermostat. Make sure the programmable thermostat works properly and that the device has new batteries installed. Test the thermostat by turning it to a setting that will cause the HVAC system to switch on.
  5. Seal HVAC ductwork. Check the HVAC system ductwork to make sure all sections fit tightly together. All connections should be sealed with mastic, a specialized sealant, or with metal tape to prevent air leaks.
