Keep Bugs at Bay with These HVAC Protecting Tips

Keep Bugs at Bay with These HVAC Protecting TipsEven though most people are familiar with the possibility of insects getting into their kitchens and bedrooms, the truth is that bugs in HVAC equipment can be quite common. We know you’d like to keep these little critters out, so here are a few tips that should help you protect your equipment from the creepy-crawlies:

Have a Professional Check Perform a Blower Door Test

Areas of air leakage throughout your home provide a perfect way for bugs to enter the household and get into your HVAC equipment. You can search for gaps and cracks around your equipment, doors, windows, and other areas yourself, but the most effective method is to call a technician to performa a blower door test in order to highlight the spots that need to be fixed.?

Cover Your Air Vents with Mesh Screens

Air vents that lead outside present another convenient conduit into your home for insects and arachnids. This fix is easy – just pick up a mesh screen for each of the vents and most of the tiny critters won’t be able to get through.

Seal Leaks in Your Ductwork

Although we already went over searching for areas of air leaks throughout your home, it’s important to specifically concentrate on your home’s ductwork. After years of use, ductwork will begin to develop gaps, tears, loosened joints, and similar issues. Fixing each of these problem areas, whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, will go a long way to keeping pests out.

Keep the Surrounding Area Clean and Devoid of Water

Pests are typically attracted to three things – water, vegetation, and debris. Removing temptation will do wonders for your pest population. Once a week or so, check the areas around the HVAC equipment to ensure that they’re all under control.
