3 Heater Maintenance To-Dos Before Cranking Up the Heat

3 Heater Maintenance To-Dos Before Cranking Up the HeatTake a little time before turning on your heater this fall to get the most from it when the temperatures plummet. Scheduling professional maintenance early in the season will put you ahead of the rush and the HVAC pro will have more time to devote to your system.

Schedule professional service.

The earlier in the heating season you schedule your appointment to have your heating system serviced, the faster you’ll be able to use it. It’s hard to predict when the first cold snap will arrive, and if your heating system has been inspected, cleaned and adjusted, it will run with greater efficiency, safety and dependability.

Professional cleaning is especially important if you use a gas furnace. A professional needs to look over the system annually and remove any deposits the fuel leaves behind. The safety switches should be tested and all the parts cleaned and tightened. The technician will adjust the air to fuel ratio and make sure the flue or chimney is clean and unobstructed.

Check the air filter before turning on the heat.

While you wait for your HVAC appointment, replace the filter if necessary. A clean air filter promotes efficient heating and increases the life of your furnace. A dirty filter slows the air flowing through the air handler, which increases the amount of time the furnace needs to heat your home, driving up energy costs. Excessive dust on the filter may even shut off your gas furnace when you most need it.

Clean the outdoor condenser.

Many Floridians use heat pumps for winter heating. The system will work more efficiently when the condenser is clean and free from any nearby obstructions. Remove dead leaves and don’t store toys or yard furniture near the condenser. If the coil appears dirty, hose it off gently.
