Ways to Use Your HVAC to Fight Fall Allergens

Ways to Use Your HVAC to Fight Fall AllergensIt sometimes seems as if those of us who suffer from allergies don’t get a break. From one season to the next, the sources of pollen change, but the symptoms are pretty much the same: sniffles, sneezing, wheezing, coughing, headaches, sinus pressure and more. If you’re dreading the changing of seasons in a couple of months because of fall allergies, you might be interested in how you can enlist your HVAC system to help you fight them.

Change your air filter.

Your HVAC system can help clean your home’s air, if you use a good quality, pleated air filter, rated MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) 8-12, and change it frequently. Lower quality fiberglass filters do little but capture larger dust particles. To capture smaller particles, such as pollen, a denser filter is needed. What’s more, a dirty filter won’t do a good job of capturing any size particles, plus it will slow down air flow so that the HVAC system doesn’t condition air properly.

Install good exhaust ventilation.

A good exhaust ventilation system will help remove stale air from your home — including moisture, dust, pet dander and pollen. This can be helpful when you bring pollen in on clothing and pets after being outdoors. The other thing you can do is brush off clothing and pets before entering the home, or remove clothing and put it in a plastic bag or hamper before you circulate in the home. Exhaust ventilation in the bathroom and the kitchen will also help remove moisture from these areas, which will reduce the chances that mold might occur in your home.

Install an air cleaner/purifier.

It may be that your HVAC system cannot remove airborne particulates sufficiently to keep your indoor air quality at the level you need. An air cleaner or purifier may help. There are a number of different models, both portable and whole home, but whole home types installed in your HVAC system may be your best option.
