Why Kitchen Ventilation During Thanksgiving is Important

Why Kitchen Ventilation During Thanksgiving is ImportantWhen you have the oven going and pots on the stovetop preparing a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, your kitchen and other rooms in your home can become overly warm and stuffy. If you’re having friends and family over to enjoy the meal, good kitchen ventilation is important to ensure everyone’s comfort. Here’s how to ensure ample ventilation for your holiday get together:

Keep Your Exhaust Fan Running

Cooking creates a lot of extra humidity and fumes, but you can direct that moist air outdoors by operating your kitchen exhaust fan while you’re preparing dinner. By venting the kitchen this way, adjacent spaces like the dining room will stay cooler and more comfortable, too.

Adjust Your Thermostat Setting

If it’s warm and humid outdoors on Thanksgiving day and your home’s interior is extra hot and sticky, lower your usual thermostat setting by a couple of degrees before your guests arrive. Your cooling equipment will not only drop the temperature down, but since it dehumidifies during the cooling process, it can help get rid of moisture from cooking.

Run Your HVAC Fan Temporarily

To help clear out fumes created in the kitchen, adjust the fan setting on the thermostat from “auto” to “on” a couple of hours before everyone is due to arrive. When it’s on auto, the fan can run continuously to better filter the air during your celebration. Remember to switch it back to auto afterward, though, so warm air isn’t being circulated after every cooling cycle.

Turn on the Ceiling Fans

For added air movement to make the rooms you plan to entertain in more comfortable, run the ceiling fans while areas like the living, family and dining rooms are occupied.

Do Your Cooking Outdoors

If you want to avoid any stress about having an uncomfortably hot, sticky house on Thanksgiving day, plan to cook your side dishes outside on your BBQ grill, and the turkey in an outdoor deep fryer.
