Winterize Your System Properly Before Winter

Winterize Your System Properly Before WinterFloridians tend to prioritize the condition of their air conditioners over their heating systems for good reasons. Florida summers can be brutal and the winters a delight, but it’s still important to winterize your HVAC system. Although mild temperatures dominate, cold days and nights are ahead and a maintained system runs more efficiently and dependably.

Get ready for the heating season by:

Inspecting the condition of the air filter for the air handler.

If it’s covered with dust, replace it. Besides driving up heating costs, a dirty filter will pull dust into the air handler where it covers the parts and insulates them. Whenever mechanical or electronic parts are dusty, they don’t run as efficiently and tend to wear out faster. Even though filter changes may not seem that consequential, dirty filters are actually the primary cause of avoidable HVAC repairs.

Checking the register covers.

Your air handler sends a great deal of air through the ductwork over the summer. Examine the register covers for dust deposits and wipe away or vacuum with a soft brush. Besides breathing all that dust, the deposits eventually retard the flow of air through the ducts, driving up your heating costs.

Cleaning the outdoor condenser.

Over the summer, it’s natural for vegetation to collect around the condenser. Pull the weeds and rake away the leaves before hosing off the condenser coil. Sometimes grass clippings collect on the coil and can be difficult to remove. Coil cleaners found at home improvement centers can help loosen them to improve HVAC efficiency.

Calling for professional service.

Besides the work you do to winterize your HVAC to get the best performance from it, your HVAC pro needs to go through it carefully. The technician will clean, inspect and adjust all its parts. A gas furnace will burn cleaner and more safely and a heat pump will use electricity more efficiently.
