What HVAC Maintenance Tasks to Complete in January

What HVAC Maintenance Tasks to Complete in JanuaryJanuary spells the end of the busy holiday season. While it may appear to be downtime for HVAC maintenance, it’s actually a prime time for taking care of your system to keep it operating at optimal efficiency throughout the new year.

Here are some of the tasks you’re recommended to perform during this month.

Inspect Your HVAC System’s Air Filter

A dirty HVAC air filter can restrict airflow, reduce your entire system’s efficiency, and damage key HVAC components. Although air filters don’t get a grueling winter workout in Florida due to our mild winters, it’s still highly advisable to examine yours and replace it if you see dust or debris on it.

Clean Your Registers

Besides a clean air filter, clean and unobstructed registers are also vital for adequate airflow. Registers that have accumulated dirt and dust or have objects covering them can result in inconsistent room temperatures. Avoid uncomfortable temperature variations by simply vacuuming or wiping down all the registers in your home. Also, check that all the grilles are completely open and unhindered by throw rugs, drapes, toys, or furniture.

Reassess Your Temperature Settings

Have your winter energy bills been higher than usual of late? January is the perfect time to reevaluate your thermostat’s settings. For maximum energy savings, program your thermostat to make eight-degree setbacks daily during the period when everyone’s asleep or at work or school.

Change Your Thermostat Batteries

As you adjust the thermostat settings, put in some fresh batteries. Having new thermostat batteries gives you peace of mind knowing your unit will keep functioning and won’t lose your temperature settings in case of a power outage.

Your HVAC system requires year-round attention for it to keep operating at peak performance. Tackle these tasks in January to start the year with greater energy efficiency and home comfort.
