5 Questions To Ask When Hiring An HVAC Contractor

5 Questions To Ask When Hiring An HVAC ContractorIt can seem daunting to hire an HVAC contractor for the first time, but armed with these questions, the process might go faster and be more rewarding. We’ve put these questions together to increase the likelihood of successfully finding a top-notch contractor for your home.

1. Are you licensed?

The state of Florida requires that all HVAC contractors have active licenses, whether they’re contractors or technicians. They must also have liability and workers’ compensation insurance and bonding that protect you financially from accidents and damages at your home.

2. What are your certifications?

Besides the mandatory licenses, HVAC professionals can apply for additional certifications once they receive their licenser from professional organizations within the HVAC field. NATE (North American Technician Excellence) membership is a nonprofit dedicated to fostering excellence in the HVAC industry. Any technician who earns membership in this organization has had to demonstrate high levels of professional knowledge and competence.

3. How do customers feel about your company?

The two most reliable ways to find out a contractor’s reputation is by asking others who have used the contractor’s services and to check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). You can ask the contractor for references and go online to review the BBB’s rating. Ratings range from A+ to F.

4. Are you factory-authorized?

It’s always a sign of excellence when an HVAC contractor has factory-authorization from a manufacturer. In order to achieve this status, the contractor has to demonstrate repeatedly that they have high customer service ratings and knowledge about HVAC products. When you choose a contractor who is factory-authorized, you’re benefitting from the deeper knowledge they have of the products.

5. Are you available 24/7?

It’s preferable to use a contractor who makes emergency calls 24/7 in the event of a breakdown. Living without your HVAC system can be uncomfortable, especially during extreme weather when they tend to fail.
