Know These HVAC Considerations When Renovating

Know These HVAC Considerations When RenovatingIf you’re planning to remodel your home in the near future, you’ll have a lot to think about, such as square footage, function, decorating, and budgets just to mention a few. Don’t make the mistake of failing to plan ahead for your HVAC system. Home renovations often affect heating and cooling equipment.

Here are the key HVAC considerations you should make.

Sizing is Important

As your house changes, your HVAC needs also change. The size of your HVAC system will need to match your newly renovated home. If your renovation project involves improving the building envelope — for example, upgrading doors and windows, caulking gaps, and air sealing crawl spaces — you’ll lessen your overall demand for heating and cooling. For that reason, your house may need a smaller heating and cooling system. Keep in mind that a system that’s too big for your home will cycle more frequently resulting in increased energy consumption and wear and tear on the system.

If your home renovation involves increasing your home’s square footage, your existing HVAC system may be incapable of heating and cooling the extra space. You may have to upgrade to a larger system.

Ductwork Configuration

If you’re adding rooms or changing your home’s layout, you may have to adjust the configuration of your ducts or add new ones. It’s much better to reconfigure ductwork during the renovation while your walls have been opened hence are more accessible.

Current Safety Regulations

New safety codes keep popping up. That implies several components of your older air conditioner or furnace may not meet the new safety standards. Your home remodel provides a great opportunity for you to bring your HVAC equipment up to code.

As you plan your remodel, don’t forget to take the HVAC needs of the new space into consideration. You can make your work easier by consulting a professional HVAC contractor.
