4 Signs Your HVAC System’s Refrigerant is Low

low refrigerantThe sweltering summer months are upon us and the last thing anyone wants is an air conditioning unit that isn’t functioning properly. In many cases, your A/C may have low refrigerant. While there are several signs of low refrigerant, if you are experiencing A/C issues, it’s always best to call a professional for servicing.

System Not Cooling

The most common sign of low refrigerant is an uncomfortable home. All A/C units are taxed heavily during the hottest months of the year. Depending on the size of your home, size and age of your unit, and the amount of shade in your area, it may take a little while to completely cool your home; however, if your A/C is continually running and never reaches its set temperature, you could have a refrigerant problem. Contact a licensed professional for a full evaluation.

Higher Electric Bills

Sometimes a refrigerant problem is more subtle. Your unit may be eventually cooling your home, but not as efficiently. In these cases, you’ll notice the difference in your electric bill. Compare your energy usage from the same period last year. If there is a marked difference, it’s time to have your A/C checked.

Noticeable Hissing Noise

Low refrigerant could be caused by a leak somewhere in the refrigerant line. Small leaks will be unnoticeable to the eyes and ears of anyone who examines the line. Larger leaks produce a distinctive hissing noise as the refrigerant escape. Your service technician will thoroughly evaluate the line to correct the leaks present.

Ice Buildup

Ice building up around the outside unit, or large amounts of water pooling in the area, usually means that the refrigerant in your unit is low. When refrigerant is low, your unit can’t cool properly. This causes a backup in the copper lines. As the lines freeze, ice is formed. If the problem is severe enough, it may cause the unit to stop working completely until the ice melts.
