HVAC Tips: 12 Simple Steps for Maintenance

HVAC tipsEven though the holiday festivities are the most important feature of this time of the year, you definitely don’t want to forget about taking care of your household’s home-comfort needs. To make sure that you’re geared up and ready to go, here are our 12 days of HVAC tips.

1. Hire a Technician. Each winter season, you should hire a professional HVAC technician to analyze the status of your heating equipment.

2. Switch Out the Air Filter. Your furnace’s air filter should be checked every one to three months and replaced as needed.

3. Upgrade Your Thermostat. Upgrading to a more advanced thermostat will allow you to have better control over your home’s heating needs.

4. Check the Insulation. Insulation is essential in preventing the escape of heat when the weather turns cold, so add some if needed.

5. Upgrade Your Heating Unit. For the perfect Christmas gift, consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient system.

6. Switch to Alternative Heating. If you want to change your household, switching to geothermal or solar heating will do the trick.

7. Install a Zoning System. Separating your home into zones will help improve heating and lower energy usage.

8. Test Smoke and CO Alarms. With so much cooking going on during the holiday, there’s no better time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

9. Add Insulation to Exposed Pipes. To prevent your exposed pipes from bursting from frozen water, wrap them in insulation.

10. Check the Ductwork. Damage to your ductwork can cause heating issues, so repair any damage that you discover.

11. Seal Air Leaks. Every home has air leaks, but the most common areas you’ll find them in are the edges around your windows and doors.

12. Clear Vents of Debris. Airflow will be impeded by blocked vents, so clean them out and remove any obstructions.
