Three of the Best Air Filters for the Winter Months

air filters for winterOne of the most critical maintenance tasks that helps ensure the efficient operation of your heating system during the winter is replacing the air filter. Running your furnace with a dirty air filter will restrict airflow, force your system to use more energy to keep you warm, and degrade your home’s air quality.

While it may be easy to find a replacement filter at your local hardware store, selecting the best between the many options available can be daunting. To make matters simpler for you, we’ve compiled a list of three excellent air filters for winter.

Nordic Pure MERV 12

This pleated air filter has a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating of 12. This implies that it removes at least:

  • 90% of the larger particles like pollen, pet hair, lint, and dust
  • 80% of the smaller particles (1.0 to 3.0 microns in size) like soot and fine dust
  • 35% of the very small particles (1 micron and below) like smoke and bacteria

This filter is available in a variety of sizes and is largely sold online. Its price is significantly lower than that of its competitors.

Filtrete MPR 1500

The MPR 1500 also delivers great filtering performance. According to tests, it removes 54% of very small particles. Its pressure drop is 0.22 inch, which is a little lower than Nordic Pure’s 0.24 inch. The lower a filter’s pressure drop, the less the filter will affect an HVAC system’s airflow and energy efficiency.

This MPR 1500 filter is available in multiple sizes. You can easily find it in nearby hardware stores.

Honeywell FPR 9

The performance level of Honeywell’s FPR 9 filter is similar to that of the Nordic Pure and Filtrete MPR 1500 filters. It comes in a number of sizes and is easy to find in hardware stores.

It isn’t MERV-certified. However, it has a proprietary Filter Performance Rating (FPR) of 9, which reportedly is equivalent to MERV 11 or 12. Its pressure-drop rating isn’t provided.

All three of these products offer good filtering performance, so you won’t regret investing in any of them.
