Should Your AC Be Making Sounds All the Time?

Your air conditioner is a complex system that’s made up of many components. Just like any other system, it produces some sounds during regular operation. However, some sounds could indicate a failing system that needs immediate attention. Let’s help you differentiate between normal and abnormal AC sounds.

Clicking

Clicking sounds are normal when your AC unit turns on and off. However, if you keep hearing loud clicking originating from the outside compressor, that could be a sign of a capacitor that’s reaching the end of its life. To avoid damaging your entire system, turn off the unit and seek professional assistance.

Humming

You’ll hear a soft humming sound as your air conditioner runs normally. If the humming resembles clanking, loose parts such as the blower fan, the blades, or the pipes rubbing against each other could be to blame. Loose parts can cause massive damage to your air conditioner if left unaddressed. The best solution is to switch off the system and contact a technician.

Hissing

Light hissing from your air vents could be a sign of a filter that’s been set incorrectly. You can easily fix the problem by making sure you place the filter correctly. The hissing sound could also indicate that the filter you’re using is the wrong size. (The gap left in the seal produces the hissing sound.) Getting the right size filter and installing it correctly should remedy the issue.

A hissing sound coming from your walls is likely due to leaky ductwork. You should leave duct repair to the professionals.

Squealing

When your air conditioner first starts, it’s normal to hear a squeal. However, continuous squealing could be a sign of a malfunctioning motor bearing or belt. Contact a professional to check your system out.
