Know When HVAC Repairs in Your Home Need a Professional

In the age of Google and YouTube, more people are trying the DIY method for a number of home repairs. DIY may be fine for some home improvement jobs, but not for HVAC concerns. Read down the following list of reasons why HVAC repairs are best left to your HVAC professional.

Want Cost-Effectiveness? Choose the Professional Solution.

Repairing your HVAC unit may seem like a cost-effective solution. However, you may well end up making the problem worse. Working on an HVAC system requires advanced knowledge and training. There are too many factors regarding safety and other elements to take a chance.

You May Void the Warranty

Many HVAC systems come with a 10-year warranty — or perhaps a longer term for certain parts. One stipulation in a standard warranty, which is almost universal, is that HVAC repairs must be performed by a certified technician. Be aware that if you tinker with HVAC repairs, you may void the warranty.

Handling Refrigerant

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that all people handling refrigerant (i.e., the liquid in your central AC or heat pump) be certified by the EPA. This isn’t to corner the repair market. This is to protect the environment from refrigerant escaping into the air.

Multiple HVAC Problems

Your HVAC system could have multiple problems. For example, let’s say you diagnose that there is a bad capacitor. You replace it. Great! Wait … now there seems to be more trouble than you first thought because the system isn’t working. It could cost more in the long run for DIY HVAC repairs when you finally do call a pro out.

Safety Reasons

The last and most important reason HVAC repairs should be left to the pros is your personal safety. To do any repair on an HVAC unit, your technician must deal with electricity. Most HVAC units run on 220 to 240 volts of current. This amount of electricity can cause death. So, leave the HVAC repairs to your certified HVAC technician for safety’s sake.
