This Year, These HVAC New Year’s Resolutions Should Be on Your List

If you adopt some New Year’s HVAC resolutions, you may get your wish for a healthy and prosperous 2021. Besides keeping you comfortable year-round, your heating and cooling system makes a substantial contribution to your overall health and well-being. Giving it the attention and maintenance it needs goes a long way toward helping it achieve your New Year’s HVAC resolutions.

Air Filters

Staying on top of the air filter for your system is the single most important thing you can do to improve your system’s performance and assure that your indoor air quality (IAQ) remains high. The filters trap particles that would otherwise end up in your HVAC equipment or remain airborne.

Check the filter monthly. When it’s covered with dust, change it. You may also want to make the most of your New Year’s HVAC resolutions by upgrading the filter to trap even more particulates, especially if you or anyone in your home has any respiratory issues. Look for filters with the highest MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) that your system can use.

Seasonal Maintenance

Many of the homes in this region use heat pumps for both heating and cooling. Keeping the outdoor condenser clean and free of plant debris will help lower energy consumption and promote heating. It’s also important to keep the coils inside the condenser clean as part of your New Year’s HVAC resolutions. Hose them off periodically, being careful to not damage the delicate fins around them.

Check the Ductwork

Another New Year’s HVAC habit to develop is checking the ductwork for leaks. A common telltale sign is an accumulation of dust near the registers. Airflow may also be lower in rooms supplied by leaking ducts. Increased system running time or higher energy bills are also signs of ductwork leaks.

Professional Maintenance

No New Year’s HVAC resolution would be complete without scheduling professional maintenance for your system. Choose a contractor who is licensed, bonded, and has NATE certification. These service visits assure you that your system will run with the highest efficiency and dependability possible.
