Air-Duct Cleaning Tools Help Indoor Air Quality Solutions

Some people put a lot of emphasis on ensuring that the food they eat or the water they drink is healthy and pure. But what about the air that you breathe every second of every day? It can be filled with pollutants or contaminants like dust particles, mold spores, and other allergens. If you want to be fully healthy, you need clean air to breathe, and that starts with solid indoor air quality solutions.

When looking for indoor air quality solutions, air duct cleaning is an important option to consider. The air in your home passes through your HVAC system several times each day; if it is traveling through dirty ducts, it makes sense that some of that dirt or mold would also be blowing out through the vents. You can avoid that problem and improve your air quality by having your ductwork cleaned as one of many indoor air quality solutions.

How Air Ducts Are Cleaned

To properly clean air ducts as part of your indoor air quality solutions, you need several specialized pieces of equipment.

  • Vacuum systems. Air duct vacuum systems could be thought of as industrial-sized versions of your normal floor vacuum cleaner. Some are the size of a truck and remain parked outside; others are portable and can be brought inside the house. It is essential that indoor units include a HEPA filter so that dirt from the ducts isn’t spread to the air in your home.
  • Brushes or whips. These are used to break loose dirt buildups or blockages and help sweep up debris inside the ducts.
  • Air compressors. Compressed air can be used to power the whips or blow dirt off HVAC components.
  • Inspection cameras or robots. Small video cameras are used to inspect deep inside ducts and see if they are clean. Sometimes, these cameras are attached to tiny robots that drive through the ductwork.
  • Spray cleaners. Spray-on cleaning solutions may be used for some of the toughest cleaning jobs. Usually, though, no liquid cleaners are used inside the ducts themselves.
