How to Tell When You Need Common Winter HVAC Service

Scheduling your furnace’s annual maintenance helps ensure it runs properly and heats your home efficiently all winter. However, sometimes your system can still experience problems and require service in the middle of the season. How can you tell if something’s wrong? Here are a few common winter HVAC service signs to look for.

  • Poor heating. Maybe the furnace isn’t turning on. Maybe the air coming from the vents and registers isn’t hot. Maybe there’s not enough air, so it’s taking forever for your house to come up to temperature. These are all common winter HVAC service issues.
  • Odd noises. If you hear squealing or whistling sounds, it may mean a problem with the fan belt. A rattling noise could indicate a loose component somewhere. Persistent thumping often means that the blower motor is off-balance, which is another one of the common winter HVAC service issues.
  • Odd smells. If you smell burning dust or a musty odor when the furnace turns on, this is likely something that will clear up after a few uses. However, if you smell something metallic burning, it could mean problems with your wiring. Burning plastic may mean damage to your circuit boards. Finally, a rotten egg smell means a carbon monoxide leak. Get out of the house immediately and call 911.
  • Problems keeping the unit running. The older your furnace gets, the more trouble it will have turning on and staying on. If you keep having to restart your furnace throughout the day, it likely needs repairs, and it may even be time for a whole-unit replacement.
  • Cycling on and off. If your furnace turns on for short periods of time, then turns off, and it repeats this cycle throughout the day, this indicates a problem. There might be an issue with your thermostat, or your airflow might be low. Your HVAC system might also be the wrong size for your home. Whatever the issue, this wastes energy and wears out your furnace. Have your HVAC technician check it out.
