Know the Ways That Allergens and Age Are Connected

People can experience allergies at any age, but the ways in which this condition affects the body can vary with age. While many studies focus on allergies in children, not as much is known about allergies in adults — especially older adults. Here’s what scientists understand so far about allergens and age.

Allergens and Age As It Relates to Seniors

Allergies in elderly individuals can be hard to detect, since seniors often have other health issues. In some cases, seniors can develop allergies to substances that never bothered them before. This can include food allergies and environmental allergies to pollen, dust, and other substances. Treatment for these allergies can be more challenging, since antihistamines and similar allergy medications can cause potentially unsafe side effects for those with other underlying conditions. For example, antihistamines can raise blood pressure, which can be dangerous for seniors who need to keep their blood pressure at safe levels.

Reducing the Risk of Allergies

Seniors can sometimes have severe reactions to allergens or develop symptoms that make other health conditions worse, such as respiratory issues. For food allergies, elderly individuals can avoid the foods that trigger these reactions. Improving indoor air quality (IAQ) is an effective way to lower the risk of reactions to environmental allergens, such as dust, mold, or pollen. There are several ways to make indoor air healthier for those at risk of allergies, such as having an air-filtration system installed to remove allergens on a regular basis. Dusting, vacuuming, and keeping windows closed can also help. Other ways to improve IAQ and reduce issues with allergens and age include having professional duct cleaning done, changing HVAC filters every few months, and having routine HVAC maintenance done to keep your HVAC equipment clean.

If you need help improving your IAQ to better cope with allergens and age, please contact NisAir Air Conditioning and Heating. Our HVAC technicians offer IAQ solutions for homeowners in Indian River, Martin, and Palm Beach counties.
