HVAC Replacement and Maintenance: A Timeline

HVAC Replacement and Maintenance: A TimelineIf you don’t maintain your car with regular tune ups, pretty soon it isn’t going to get you very far. Or, worse yet, leave you stranded on the side of the road in sweltering temperatures. This isn’t an extreme analogy at all when you’re talking about your home comfort, energy bills, and making your HVAC maintenance timeline a high priority. Use this guide to help prevent expensive HVAC repairs and early system failure.

HVAC Maintenance Timeline

The best time of the year to schedule HVAC maintenance is during the spring and fall seasons. First, you stay ahead of peak season service and repair calls that all HVAC companies receive when outdoor temperatures spike and dip.

Secondly, it’s not advisable to enter the summer months with an A/C or heat pump that needs to be tuned up. Breakdowns are going to be more likely and more expensive, and you’ll be paying higher energy bills to run an inefficient cooling systems.

Your water heater, ductwork, and ductless mini split require annual preventive maintenance to maintain efficient and clean hot water service, free airflow, and zoned cooling. Ideally, have these systems inspected and tuned up in the spring.

HVAC Replacement Guide

When estimating the service life of an HVAC system, the automobile analogy holds true again. The “mileage” you’re going to get out of your heat pump or furnace, for example, depends on the wear they endure and the quality and timeline of preventive maintenance.

If your HVAC systems are older than the following service life estimates, you may wish to replace your old systems for new high-efficiency cooling and heating systems. You’ll save energy and experience superior comfort!

  • Central air or heat pump: 10 to 15 years
  • Gas furnace: 15 to 20 years
  • Water heater: 8 to 12 years
  • Ductwork: Lifetime if maintained
  • Ductless system: 15 to 20 years
