These HVAC Filter Types Are the Best Choices Available

The type of HVAC filter you choose will have a substantial impact on HVAC operation, energy efficiency, and the indoor air quality in your home. That’s a lot of responsibility for such a low-tech device. Furthermore, it may take some thoughtful consideration about which HVAC filter types you will choose. Here are some tips to help you decide.

Pleated HVAC Filter Types

Pleated HVAC filter types are the most popular HVAC filters. They are made of polyester, paper, or cotton, and they range widely in price to suit anyone’s budget. In general, pleated filters are all effective at capturing airborne particulates.

If you have pets, indoor smokers, or people with respiratory ailments in your home, you’ll want to dig a little deeper into the quality of the pleated filter you purchase. Look for MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) ratings of 8 to 13. Filters in this rating scale remove allergens, particles, and pathogens, such as harmful viruses.

Extra-Thick Pleated HVAC Filter Types

The standard thickness of HVAC filters is 1 inch. However, also available is an extra-thick pleated filter that still fits into the 1-inch slot of many HVAC systems without any modification needed. With this unique design, a few more inches of thickness is added to the filter, which helps it capture more contaminants and last from six months to a year. That’s substantially longer than most pleated filters.

HEPA HVAC Filter Types

HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air. HEPA filters are the best-rated media filters you can get. HEPA filters are often used on vacuum cleaners and in buildings and rooms with sensitive equipment or people.

HEPA filters are rated MERV 16 to 20. They’ll remove up to 99.97% of contaminants. Most people don’t need a whole-home HEPA filter system for their home. However, if you do, you may need a special modification to your HVAC system.
