When Is It Time to Get New Ductwork for Your HVAC System?

With the arrival of warmer temperatures, you definitely need your AC system to run efficiently. However, AC efficiency also greatly depends upon your ductwork being in good working order. The older your ducts get, chances are they become less efficient. What follows are signs that it may be time for new ductwork in your home.

Strange Ductwork Noises

When your AC turns on, you expect to hear some noises. Airflow from the vents creates that whooshing noise, and you may hear your outdoor unit’s blower motor running. However, strange noises from the air vents and ductwork is a sign you need new ductwork — or at least duct repairs.

Rattling and clamoring is a common unusual noise that you don’t want to hear. These noises indicate that you have loose and leaky ducts rattling away somewhere in the system. Call your HVAC technician to take a look at the ductwork and consider new ductwork, because duct leaks are very expensive energy wasters.

Contaminated Ductwork

Ductwork systems can collect a lot of dust and dirt. This buildup of dirt reduces indoor air quality and makes your AC work harder to push airflow through the supply ducts. That’s why your ducts should be cleaned periodically to keep them efficient and help your indoor air quality.

Another contaminant that is not a friend of your ductwork system is mold. If mold colonies begin taking root in your ductwork, they are very difficult to get rid of. Further, holes and duct leaks in the ductwork can pull in contaminants from outside the living spaces. You should consider new ductwork at this point.

Higher Energy Bills

Old ductwork that isn’t properly insulated or wasn’t designed right in the first place can increase your energy bills. New ductwork should be designed to distribute airflow efficiently to each room of your home. If your energy bills seem suspiciously high, it could be due to old ductwork that was poorly designed.
