Your AC Blowing Out Hot Air Can Be a Problem This Summer

With the sizzling summer temperatures here in Florida, the last thing you want coming into your home is heat. Nevertheless, an AC blowing out hot air is a common HVAC malfunction. Fortunately, in some cases, you can fix the problem on your own. Here are the possible reasons and fixes for an AC blowing out hot air.

Incorrectly Set Thermostat

You’ll find your AC blowing out hot air if someone accidentally sets the thermostat to “Heat.” Flipping the setting back to “cool” should fix the issue.

You should also check if your thermostat is set to “On” or “Auto.” Your air conditioner cools your home in cycles. Having the thermostat set to “On” will make the fan run continuously to circulate air, even when the air conditioner is off. As a result, the air coming out of your vents may be warm or hot sometimes.

Turn the setting to “Auto” to make the fan turn on automatically only when air is being cooled.

Dirty Air Filter

A dirty air filter restricts airflow to and from your AC unit. Your unit will have a hard time trying to cool your house, often resulting in insufficient air coming from the AC vents. Be sure to check your air filter’s condition every month. Replace the filter if it’s dirty.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Your indoor AC unit will blow warm air if your outdoor unit’s circuit breaker trips. Check the breaker box and reset the unit’s breaker if it has tripped. If it trips again, contact an HVAC professional.

Dirty Outdoor AC Unit

Your outdoor unit also needs free airflow to work properly. Over time, debris can coat the unit and block airflow. As a result, your AC system will struggle to efficiently cool your home.

To clean the outside unit, you’ll need to turn it off first. Use gloved hands to remove large debris from the unit. To remove smaller debris, rinse the unit gently with a garden hose. Invest in professional AC maintenance to have your outdoor unit cleaned properly.

If the issues above are not the reason for your AC blowing out hot air, you may be having a refrigerant leak or compressor issues. These will need professional assistance.
