Know These HVAC Tests to Help Maintain Your System

The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in your Treasure Coast home keep you comfortable year-round. However, have you ever wondered how your furnace works or what is involved in an HVAC test and service call? Knowing the basics of what your certified HVAC technician does can help you maintain your furnace for better efficiency, greater comfort, and to help reduce repairs.

Gas-Furnace HVAC Tests

If you heat your home with a gas furnace, it’s imperative to schedule professional service each year for safety’s sake. What follows are the general HVAC tests your technician performs:

  • Air-return grilles and air-supply vents are checked for blockages.
  • Thermostat calibration is checked to help prevent overheating and to keep energy bills lower.
  • The call for heat and start-up cycle are checked for correct function.
  • Gas furnaces have multiple safety features and controls that need to be tested each year. These tests help prevent backdrafting and fires.
  • A flame-sensor test is performed and the burner is checked for proper ignition.
  • A loose or dirty electrical connection can bring furnace heating to a halt. All electrical contact points are checked and tested.
  • The flue and vent system are tested for blockages and leaks.
  • The heat exchanger is checked and tested for signs of corrosion, cracks, and/or separations. A cracked heat exchanger is very dangerous and requires your system be shut down until it is repaired or replaced.
  • An amp-draw test is performed on the blower motor.
  • The blower assembly is inspected, tested, and cleaned to remove dust and dirt, which can lead to a blower-motor failure.
  • The blower’s moving parts are lubricated.
  • The furnace filter is changed. It’s advisable to use no less than a mid-efficiency furnace filter to help protect vulnerable furnace parts.
