Can AC and Window Units Work Well Together in Your Home?

You have a number of options when it comes to keeping your home cool throughout the Florida summer. Two of the most popular are central AC and window units. Which one is best for your home? Can AC and window units work together? Here’s what you need to know.

Central AC vs. Window Units

A central AC circulates air throughout your home via your ductwork. As long as you keep it properly maintained, it’s an efficient and effective method of cooling. However, purchasing and installing one can be expensive.

Window units are much cheaper and use less energy. That’s because they’re designed to cool individual rooms rather than an entire house. They’re most commonly used in apartments, but if you have a small home, you might decide several window units are preferable to a central system. However, if you need more than three or four units, the cost of a central AC will be cheaper than the cost of installing and maintaining window ACs in each room.

AC and Window Units Together

What about AC and window units working in concert? Can you improve your home cooling by pairing a central system with window units? Not usually. Since your AC’s job is circulating air throughout your entire home, there’s not much a window unit can add.

What if your system isn’t cooling your home properly? Maybe there are disparate temperatures or rooms that remain hot while everything else is cool. Try a zoning system, which lets you control the temperature for each room individually. Also, check with your HVAC technician to make sure your system is properly sized for your home.

There is one situation wherein a window unit in conjunction with your AC can be helpful: if you have a room that was added later or is otherwise not connected to the house’s ductwork. Installing additional ductwork can be complicated and costly. A window unit for that section is a quick and easy fix.
