What You Should Look For During an HVAC Installation

HVAC InstallationThe installation of your HVAC unit is every bit as important as the unit itself. If it’s not installed properly, it won’t work properly. It wastes energy, breaks down more frequently, and ultimately has a shortened life span. It can also make your house uncomfortable. When it comes to quality HVAC installation, here’s what to look for.

  • Sizing. One of the biggest problems with HVAC installation is getting the wrong-size unit for your home. Too small and it becomes overworked, wasting energy. Too big and it short-cycles, turning on and off in rapid succession, which also wastes energy and wears out your system in addition to making your house feel clammy and uncomfortable. Make sure your HVAC technician uses Manual J to calculate the correct HVAC load for your home.
  • NATE certification. How do you ensure your HVAC contractor knows what they’re doing? How do you know they’re experienced in installing this particular type of system and can do the job properly? Make sure they’ve received certification from the North American Technical Excellence (NATE) organization, which ensures they’ve been trained in the ins and outs of the equipment you’re purchasing and have both the knowledge and experience to install it properly.
  • Placement. Where will the new unit go? It should be somewhere out of the way but still easily accessible for maintenance and repairs. A split system should have its outdoor unit placed somewhere where the noise won’t be a bother to you or your neighbors. Talk with your HVAC contractor about the best place to put the new unit.
  • Ductwork. Just as your HVAC system needs to be properly sized, so does your ductwork. If your ducts don’t fit your home, it can cause poor air circulation as well as issues with pressure, air leaks, wasted energy and more. Have your contractor check your ducts before HVAC installation to ensure they’re the right size.
