The Benefits of Having Air Purification in Your Home

Your HVAC system has an air filter that eliminates dust and other contaminants from your home’s air. It has its limits, though. If you really want to boost your indoor air quality, invest in a separate air purification system. Here are the benefits.

What an Air Purifier Can Do

Typical HVAC filters have MERV ratings between 8 and 12. That means they can remove particles from your air down to 1 micron, which includes things like dust, mold, and pet dander. However, they miss smaller particles, such as smoke from cooking, paint fumes, not to mention viruses and bacteria. Furthermore, the smaller the particles, the more harmful they are to your body.

Better protection from contaminants requires a filter with a higher MERV rating. Unfortunately, these high-efficiency filters aren’t designed to fit inside your HVAC system. They restrict airflow and cause damage. To boost your home’s IAQ, you need a separate air purifier. It not only helps eliminate the particles that cause allergies and asthma but also harmful chemicals and even unpleasant odors.

Air Purification Options

A UV purifier exposes your air to UV light, killing all organic matter before it circulates through your home. This includes bacteria, mold, and mildew. Certain houseplants can clean your air as well. English ivy can remove chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde and eliminate unpleasant odors. Spider plants absorb a variety of toxins as well, including carbon monoxide.

In order to get the most from these air purification options, though, it’s important to pair them with an air filter that can remove dust and contaminants. High-efficiency air purifiers are designed to use the HEPA filters that your HVAC system can’t. They eliminate 99.97% of contaminants, down to 0.3 microns, which includes viruses, bacteria, and more.

Finally, don’t forget to replace your air filter regularly. HVAC filters last three to six months, while HEPA filters can last up to a year.
